The Amazon Luna controller is currently on sale for Black Friday for just $39.99 (referral link). We thought we’d finally give it the full review treatment.

First impressions definitely matter. Before you open the purple box that houses your new controller, you can already feel the quality. After unboxing the Amazon Luna controller, the impression remains. This is a well-built, comfortable controller and for good reason. The fact Microsoft hasn’t taken legal action for the similarities here surprises me. Unlike the Xbox controller, though, the Luna Controller boasts a unique feature called Cloud Direct, which allows it to connect directly to Amazon’s servers via Wi-Fi, reducing latency and improving the overall gaming experience on Luna compared to the Bluetooth connectivity.

The Good

The Luna controller offers several advantages for gamers. Its Cloud Direct Technology provides a noticeable improvement in responsiveness, making games feel more immediate by reducing lag. This direct Wifi connection sets the Luna controller apart from its competitors and enhances the overall gaming experience.

In terms of design, the Luna controller excels with its comfortable and ergonomic shape. The textured grips and familiar layout, reminiscent of an Xbox controller, ensure extended play sessions without discomfort. The controller’s solid build quality adds to its appeal, as the buttons and triggers provide a responsive and satisfying tactile feel.

Moreover, the Luna controller exhibits remarkable versatility by supporting cross-platform compatibility. While primarily designed for use with Luna, it can also be seamlessly paired with other devices such as PCs, phones, and tablets via Bluetooth. This versatility makes it a suitable option for gamers who enjoy playing across multiple platforms.

The Luna controller connects to Android devices via Bluetooth, allowing you to use it with other cloud gaming services like Xbox Cloud Gaming or GeForce NOW. Something I often do on my Galaxy Z Fold 6 or Tab S9 Ultra. When gaming on either of these devices, the Luna controller is my go to device. While you won’t benefit from the Cloud Direct technology, the controller is comfortable and responsive enough for a solid gaming experience.

The Bad

The Luna controller has a few drawbacks. Firstly, its reliance on AA batteries feels outdated in an era where most controllers are rechargeable. Unlike the Xbox controller which offers an internal-rechargeable replacement kit, the Luna controller is a AA or nothing experience. This can be frustrating, especially when you’re in the middle of an intense gaming session and your batteries run out.

Secondly, the Luna controller is slightly more expensive than other controllers on the market. This price difference may not seem significant, but it could be a deterrent for some buyers, especially considering that the Luna controller’s benefits are primarily limited to the Luna ecosystem. Finally, some users have reported issues with the D-pad and triggers. The D-pad is said to feel stiff, making it difficult to execute precise movements. Additionally, the triggers require more force to actuate compared to other controllers, which can be uncomfortable during extended gaming sessions.

Portability

The Luna controller may not be as petite as some of its smaller counterparts, but its moderately compact design certainly makes it a portable companion. Its ability to be carried with a foldable device enhances its convenience, allowing you to enjoy gaming sessions on the go.

Whether you’re relaxing at home or traveling to distant lands, the Luna controller’s portability ensures you can effortlessly bring your gaming world with you. Its ergonomic shape and lightweight construction make it comfortable to hold for extended periods, minimizing strain on your hands and wrists during intense gaming battles. Additionally, the Luna controller’s wireless capability eliminates the need for cumbersome cables, making it easy to set up and use anywhere, anytime.

As you move your Amazon Luna gaming session from device to device – from your phone to your TV for example, your controller remains connected to the game.

With its sleek design and portability in mind, the Luna controller is an ideal choice for gamers who value both performance and convenience.

Overall:

The Amazon Luna controller is a good option for those heavily invested in the Luna ecosystem. The Cloud Direct technology provides a noticeable improvement in latency, making it the ideal controller for Luna. However, for those primarily interested in gaming on other cloud services or platforms, there might be more compelling options available at a lower price point.

Recommendation:

  • Luna Enthusiasts: Buy it! The Cloud Direct technology is worth it for serious Luna users.
  • Casual Luna Users/Other Cloud Gamers: Consider it if you find it on sale and prioritize comfort and build quality. If you’re not playing on Luna, get an Xbox controller.
  • Price-Conscious Gamers: Explore other options with similar features at a lower cost.
